Ghana’s former finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to the agency’s public database, which shows he is being held at a facility in the state of Virginia.
Ofori-Atta, who is wanted in Ghana over alleged corruption offences, has remained in the United States since January last year while undergoing medical treatment, including surgery for prostate cancer.
Authorities in Ghana declared him a fugitive in February, and he was formally charged in November.
U.S. officials say he was later taken into custody over immigration-related issues while attempting to extend his stay in the country.
Ofori-Atta served as finance minister under former President Nana Akufo-Addo, where he played a key role in introducing controversial tax reforms and leading negotiations with the International Monetary Fund during Ghana’s economic crisis.
