The Gombe State Government has disbursed a total of ₦14 million to the families of seven journalists who lost their lives in a tragic motor accident along the Billiri–Kumo road.
Presenting the support on behalf of the state government, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, said each affected family received ₦2 million as financial assistance to help with burial arrangements and other immediate needs.
Njodi explained that the gesture was in line with the directive of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya to ease the hardship faced by the bereaved families. He added that the state government has also taken responsibility for settling the medical bills of journalists who sustained injuries in the accident.
He expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing it as a painful blow to both the state and the journalism profession, while stressing that the money was not intended as compensation.
In his remarks, the National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahi, commended the Gombe State Government for the intervention and urged the Federal Government to fast-track the implementation of life and health insurance schemes for journalists.
Speaking on behalf of the bereaved families, legal practitioner Abubakar Ahmed expressed gratitude to the governor, noting that the assistance would significantly help the families meet their immediate and long-term needs.
