The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security advisory to American citizens in Nigeria ahead of a planned nationwide demonstration scheduled for Monday, October 20, calling for the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement released on Friday, the embassy warned U.S. citizens to exercise caution, avoid large gatherings, and remain alert to their surroundings due to the potential for civil unrest during the protest. It further advised residents and visitors to monitor local media for updates and follow the instructions of local authorities.
The advisory noted that demonstrations, even when intended to be peaceful, can turn confrontational and escalate quickly, leading to possible violence, road closures, and disruptions to movement across major cities.
The warning comes amid rising anticipation ahead of the “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now” protest, which organizers say will take place simultaneously in Abuja, Lagos, Enugu, and other major urban centers.
Security agencies have been placed on alert, while the Federal High Court in Abuja recently dismissed a police request seeking to halt the planned protest.
