MAIDUGURI, Nigeria
Suspected terrorists have attacked a Nigerian military base in Borno State, killing four soldiers and injuring several others during a fierce overnight battle.
Security sources told The Reporters that the incident occurred late Thursday at a forward operating base in the Ngamdu area, situated along the Borno–Yobe axis. The assailants, believed to be members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), stormed the location in large numbers, arriving on motorcycles and gun trucks.
Troops attached to Operation Hadin Kai reportedly engaged the insurgents in a prolonged exchange of gunfire. Despite putting up stiff resistance, the army lost four personnel, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
A security source who spoke anonymously confirmed the attack, saying, “The terrorists came in around midnight and opened fire from multiple directions. Our troops responded immediately and fought back. Sadly, we lost four men in the process.”
Military authorities have since deployed reinforcements to secure the area and pursue the fleeing gunmen.
The latest assault underscores the continued threat posed by insurgents in the North-East region, where Boko Haram and ISWAP militants have maintained their presence despite sustained counterinsurgency operations.
