The Senate has passed a bill seeking to introduce stricter penalties for a range of road traffic offences, including trading and preaching inside public transport vehicles, as part of efforts to improve road safety across the country.
Under the proposed legislation, individuals found selling goods, trading or preaching inside buses, minibuses and other public transport vehicles could face a fine of $33.
The bill also proposes stiffer sanctions for motorists. Drivers caught driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding or violating traffic signs could be fined $66.
In addition, motorists who refuse to undergo a roadside breathalyser test could be liable to a $33 fine, up to six months’ imprisonment, or both, if the bill is signed into law.
Lawmakers said the proposed amendments are aimed at reducing road crashes, improving compliance with traffic regulations and enhancing safety on Nigerian roads.
The bill has now been forwarded to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for assent before it can become law.
