Zulum Raises Alarm Over Suspected Sabotage After Boko Haram Drone Strike in Borno

Maiduguri

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has warned of possible sabotage within security circles following a drone attack allegedly carried out by Boko Haram insurgents on a military base in Mafa Local Government Area.

Speaking during a security briefing in Maiduguri, the governor described the incident as a disturbing escalation of the insurgents’ capabilities, noting that the use of drones by non-state actors signals a new phase in the region’s security challenge.

“This development is worrisome. The use of drones by Boko Haram is a major shift in their operational tactics, and it calls for a deeper investigation into how such technology reached their hands,” Zulum said.

The governor expressed concern that the successful deployment of the drone could not have occurred without possible internal compromise, urging security agencies to uncover any saboteurs or intelligence leaks aiding the insurgents.

Zulum called for urgent reinforcement of air surveillance and border monitoring, stressing that Nigeria’s defence systems must adapt quickly to counter emerging threats from extremist groups.

“There might be elements of sabotage that need to be identified and addressed. We must not trade blame but focus on fixing our security lapses,” he added.

Security experts have warned that the drone strike marks a new level of sophistication by Boko Haram, highlighting the need for coordinated efforts between federal and state authorities to prevent further attacks.

Governor Zulum reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the military and intelligence agencies, urging local communities to remain alert and cooperate with security operatives.
