A private meeting between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has sparked intense political debate across Nigeria, with many linking the development to early preparations for the 2027 presidential election.
Although neither politician has publicly disclosed details of the discussion, growing speculation suggests both men may harbour ambitions to contest for the presidency in 2027.
The meeting, which took place at Jonathan’s Abuja residence, drew attention given the political tension that has existed between the two , especially as Atiku was among key figures who championed the movement that unseated Jonathan’s administration in 2015.
Experts Give Mixed Interpretations
Political analyst and lecturer at the University of Abuja, Professor Abubakar Kari, told the BBC that such meetings are not unusual among major political actors.
According to him, the encounter may indicate attempts to reconcile interests, negotiate alliances, or decide who steps down for the other ahead of 2027.
He said, “It is not surprising. They may simply want to understand each other better or even explore the possibility of forming an alliance.”
In a separate reaction, Dr. Yakubu Haruna Ja’e of Kaduna State University said the meeting is likely to unsettle many political stakeholders including those planning to run for office and members of the current government.
He stated, “This meeting will frighten major political players and even the ruling government. It may signal moves to unite behind a strong candidate capable of challenging the ruling party in 2027.”
Possible Running Mate Speculations
The political intrigue deepened amid reports suggesting Atiku has already begun considering possible running mates. Sources claim he is weighing options between former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and ex-Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi.
As 2027 draws nearer, analysts believe the Atiku–Jonathan meeting could mark the beginning of broader realignments within Nigeria’s opposition bloc.
