Peter Obi Urges Rehabilitation of ‘Yahoo Boys,’ Says They Are Geniuses in Need of Redirection

Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Mr. Peter Obi, has called for a shift in how Nigeria addresses youth involvement in cybercrime, describing so-called “Yahoo boys” as “geniuses who need redirection, not condemnation.”

Speaking at an event in Onitsha, Anambra State, Obi emphasized that many young Nigerians engaged in internet fraud possess exceptional creativity and intelligence, which, if properly harnessed, could contribute significantly to national development.

“I told the youths that some of our so-called Yahoo boys are geniuses who need redirection, not condemnation. Their creativity and courage, if properly guided, can drive innovation and create value for our society,” Obi stated.

He argued that the country must focus on reform and empowerment rather than punishment alone, stressing that misdirected talent often stems from unemployment, poor education, and lack of mentorship.

Obi also cautioned against the glorification of corruption and materialism, saying that Nigeria must return to values rooted in honesty, integrity, and productivity.

“We must stop celebrating ill-gotten wealth. What our youths need is opportunity and purpose, not blame,” he added.

His remarks have since stirred nationwide debate, with some praising his progressive stance on youth rehabilitation, while others criticized his comment as appearing to downplay the seriousness of cybercrime.

The discussion has reignited broader conversations on how Nigeria can reform its education and employment systems to provide productive alternatives for young people.
