Nigerian Lawmaker Proposes Creation of Six New States to Strengthen Federal Balance

A member of the House of Representatives has proposed the creation of six additional states across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones, citing the need to enhance equity, representation, and administrative efficiency in the country’s federal system.

The proposal, which was presented during a plenary session on constitutional amendment, seeks to increase Nigeria’s total number of states from 36 to 42, with one new state recommended for each of the six geopolitical zones.

According to the lawmaker, the creation of new states would address long-standing agitations for inclusion and balance among various ethnic and regional groups.

“The demand for additional states reflects the aspirations of Nigerians who feel politically and economically marginalized under the current structure,” the legislator explained.

The lawmaker argued that the establishment of new states would promote unity and fairness while fostering grassroots development and better governance.

The recommendation forms part of a broader constitutional review exercise aimed at restructuring Nigeria’s administrative and political framework. The proposed amendment will undergo further scrutiny through committee review, public hearings, and eventual consideration by both chambers of the National Assembly.

However, analysts and civil society groups have expressed mixed reactions to the proposal. While some view it as a positive step toward national integration, others caution that expanding the number of states could further strain the country’s economic and administrative resources.

The debate over state creation has persisted for years in Nigeria’s political landscape, often resurfacing during constitutional reforms and national dialogue sessions.
