Nigeria Introduces Journalism, AI, Programming Into New Secondary School Curriculum

The Federal Government has unveiled a new secondary school curriculum that incorporates modern skills such as journalism, computer programming, artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics into the national syllabus.

Details of the policy were shared by Dada Olusegun, Senior Special Assistant on Social Media to President Bola Tinubu, who posted excerpts of the yet-to-be-published document on Wednesday.

Under the revised curriculum, junior secondary school (JSS 1–3) students will be introduced to digital literacy, coding in Python, Scratch programming, and basic robotics, alongside core subjects such as Mathematics, English, Integrated Science, Social Studies, Creative Arts, Languages, and Physical and Health Education.

At the senior secondary level (SS 1–3), English and Communication studies have been expanded to include modules on journalism, fact-checking, public speaking, and research. In addition, technology-focused subjects such as programming, data science, AI, cybersecurity, and digital entrepreneurship will form part of the syllabus. Students will also be required to complete and defend a final-year research project.

The new curriculum is expected to take effect from the 2025/2026 academic session beginning in September.

According to education officials, the reforms are designed to prepare Nigerian students for a rapidly evolving digital economy, while enhancing creativity, innovation, and critical thinking skills to make them globally competitive.
