The National Examinations Council (NECO) has established its first-ever examination centre in London, United Kingdom, marking a major step in extending its services to Nigerians in the diaspora.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony, the Registrar and Chief Executive of NECO, Prof. Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, said the initiative aims to provide credible and accessible examination opportunities for Nigerians living outside the country.
He explained that the London centre would enable students who wish to sit for NECO’s Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) to do so without travelling to Nigeria, aligning with the council’s commitment to inclusivity and global educational access.
“Our goal is to ensure that every Nigerian child, whether at home or abroad, has access to standard and credible assessments. This centre in London represents our effort to support the educational aspirations of Nigerians overseas,” Prof. Wushishi stated.
The Registrar added that the establishment of the foreign centre also supports Nigeria’s education policy on international engagement and collaboration.
The new NECO centre was launched in partnership with Barnfield Education Ltd (BEP Education) during the Education Matters Conference UK 2025.
The development has been widely commended by education stakeholders, including the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, who described the move as a landmark achievement that would strengthen Nigeria’s global academic presence.
“This initiative gives Nigerians abroad the opportunity to acquire recognized secondary school qualifications under NECO’s globally respected framework,” the minister said.
NECO noted that its certificates are already recognized by several UK institutions, including Birmingham City University and Leeds Trinity University, for undergraduate admissions.
The Council also revealed plans to establish additional examination centres in other countries with large Nigerian populations, including Egypt and Burkina Faso.
