The Federal Government has announced that Mathematics will no longer be a compulsory subject for students seeking admission into universities and other tertiary institutions to study courses in the Arts.
Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, disclosed this on Monday while addressing education stakeholders during a policy review session in Abuja. He explained that the decision was aimed at removing unnecessary barriers that have hindered many qualified candidates from pursuing their desired academic fields.
According to Mamman, the review aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to reform the education system and make it more inclusive and flexible, particularly for students whose disciplines do not require advanced mathematical skills.
He emphasized that while Mathematics remains essential for Science, Technology, and Social Science programmes, Arts-related courses would henceforth have adjusted admission requirements to reflect their core competencies.
The new policy is expected to take effect from the next admission cycle.
