A dramatic twist occurred at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday as the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, took over his own defense following the withdrawal of his legal team.
Kanu’s lawyers, led by Aloy Ejimakor and Ifeanyi Ejiofor, reportedly announced their decision to withdraw from the ongoing trial, citing undisclosed reasons. The development left the separatist leader with no choice but to personally handle his case before Justice Binta Nyako.
During the session, Kanu told the court he would represent himself henceforth, expressing dissatisfaction with the conduct of his previous legal representatives. The court proceedings were momentarily halted as the development sent murmurs through the courtroom.
Justice Nyako adjourned the matter to allow Kanu to prepare adequately for his self-representation.
Kanu is facing charges bordering on treasonable felony and terrorism, which he has consistently denied, insisting his struggle is for the self-determination of the Igbo people.
