The Benue State Government has shut down 12 unlicensed hospitals operating across the state, describing the continued patronage of such facilities as a “suicide mission.”
The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Yanmar Ortese, who disclosed this on Friday, said the closure followed a statewide monitoring exercise that uncovered several illegal health centres operating without necessary approvals.
Ortese explained that most of the affected hospitals lacked qualified personnel and standard equipment, posing serious dangers to patients who rely on their services.
He urged residents to desist from seeking medical care in such facilities, stressing that the government would intensify its clampdown on quackery and ensure only accredited hospitals are allowed to operate.
According to the commissioner, the move is part of ongoing reforms to strengthen the state’s healthcare system and safeguard the lives of citizens.
