The Bayelsa State Government has officially confirmed the death of Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, who collapsed suddenly while carrying out official duties on Thursday, December 11, 2025.
In a statement issued by the Bayelsa Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, the government said the 60‑year‑old elder statesman was active earlier in the day before collapsing on his way to a scheduled meeting at the Government House in Yenagoa. He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where he was later pronounced dead.
Governor Douye Diri described the loss as one of “deep regret and profound shock,” declaring a three‑day period of state mourning, during which all government flags are to fly at half‑mast in honour of the late deputy governor.
Ewhrudjakpo, a seasoned politician and public servant, had served Bayelsa State in various capacities, including as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Senator representing Bayelsa West, and Deputy Governor since 2020. His sudden passing has drawn widespread tributes from across the political spectrum, with leaders praising his dedication to service and commitment to the welfare of the state.
