The Cambodian government has ordered African nationals residing illegally in the country to leave before May 31, warning that anyone who fails to comply could face imprisonment and a fine of up to $8,000.
According to reports, the directive is part of a wider immigration enforcement campaign aimed at addressing undocumented migration and tightening border control measures within the Southeast Asian nation.
Authorities stated that affected individuals are expected to regularise their immigration status or voluntarily exit the country before the deadline expires. Officials warned that defaulters would be subjected to legal action, including detention, prosecution, and heavy financial penalties under Cambodia’s immigration laws.
The government said the move is intended to strengthen national security and ensure compliance with residency regulations. However, the announcement has sparked concern among some migrant communities and human rights observers over the possible impact on vulnerable foreign residents.
The enforcement deadline is scheduled for May 31.
