Seoul – South Korea’s intelligence agency has reported that nearly 2,000 North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine have been killed.The update came after a briefing by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) to lawmakers on Tuesday.
According to Lee Seong-kweun, a member of parliament who attended the session, the figure marks a sharp rise from the 600 casualties the NIS disclosed in April.Western and South Korean intelligence sources estimate that Pyongyang deployed more than 10,000 soldiers to Russia last year, with most stationed in the Kursk region near the Ukrainian border.
In addition to troops, North Korea has supplied Russia with artillery shells, missiles, and rocket systems.The NIS further assessed that Pyongyang is preparing to dispatch another 6,000 soldiers.Details of the deployment remain scarce, as Russia and North Korea have released little information since the reported troop movements began in November 2024.
Pyongyang publicly acknowledged the deployment for the first time in April, admitting that some of its soldiers had been killed.In July, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with families of fallen soldiers, offering condolences and honoring their sacrifices.
