A Nigerian national, Chukwuemeka Michael Ahanonu, has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the United Kingdom after being found guilty of murdering a woman in a random attack in Leicester.
The 24-year-old was convicted for the fatal assault of Nila Patel, 56, which occurred on the afternoon of June 24, 2025, along Infirmary Road.
According to a statement by Leicestershire Police, the incident happened shortly after Ahanonu crashed his car while driving dangerously through the city centre. His reckless driving reportedly included swerving across lanes, running traffic lights, and heading toward pedestrians and a bus stop where people were waiting.
Following the crash, he attacked Patel, who had just alighted from a bus and was on her way home.
Police investigations revealed that Ahanonu was under the influence of cannabis at the time of the incident. Officers also discovered dealer-sized quantities of the substance in his vehicle after his arrest.
The victim’s family described her as a “beautiful, vibrant soul” and “one of the most kind-hearted people you could ever meet.”
The court subsequently handed down a life sentence, bringing closure to the tragic case.
