A former presidential aide, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has called on President Bola Tinubu to personally address Nigerians following recent threats of U.S. military action against the country.
Baba-Ahmed, who made the call in a statement posted on his official Facebook page, criticized the president’s silence amid rising public anxiety after former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed he was “very much in charge” of a planned U.S. military response against Nigeria.
He said it was inappropriate for ministers or presidential aides to issue statements on behalf of the president over such a serious matter, stressing that Nigerians deserved direct communication from Tinubu.
“If President Tinubu truly has competent advisers, he should have spoken to the nation by now,” Baba-Ahmed said, urging the president to reassure citizens and clarify Nigeria’s diplomatic position.
He also advised Tinubu not to travel to the United States for any talks with Trump at this time, warning that such a move could project weakness and damage Nigeria’s image.
Baba-Ahmed further called for the immediate appointment of ambassadors to strengthen Nigeria’s global representation, noting that the country “cannot afford to remain invisible” in the face of mounting international tension.
