The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has begun rallying its members across Nigerian universities in preparation for a nationwide strike.
The union stated that the action comes after repeated government inaction despite official notifications sent to relevant authorities, including the Ministries of Labour and Education.
Daily Trust reports that in a letter dated October 5, 2025, ASUU President Professor Chris Piwuna noted that there has been no progress in resolving long-standing issues that have fueled tensions between the government and the union.
According to Piwuna, ASUU’s national executive council has given the government a 14-day ultimatum to finalize agreements initially drafted in February 2025. Should the government fail to act within this period, the union intends to commence a two-week warning strike.
ASUU emphasized that the strike aims to compel the government to implement a new agreement and revitalize the country’s university system to align with global standards.
