Chad’s parliament has overwhelmingly passed a constitutional amendment abolishing presidential term limits, a move widely seen by critics as an attempt to prolong President Mahamat Idriss Deby’s hold on power.
Deby, who assumed leadership in 2021 following the battlefield death of his father and longtime ruler, Idriss Deby Itno, was elected president in May 2024 in a disputed election largely boycotted by opposition parties.
The newly approved reform also introduces the position of deputy prime minister, extends parliamentary terms from five to six years, and reinstates legal immunity for government officials.
Observers say the development marks a significant consolidation of power under Deby’s administration, raising fresh concerns about the future of democratic governance in the Central African nation.
