A Canadian study has found that cannabis consumption may impair women’s fertility and lower the success rate of in vitro fertilization (IVF). Researchers at the CReATe Fertility Centre in Toronto discovered that women with THC detected in their ovarian follicular fluid produced fewer genetically healthy embryos, increasing risks of miscarriage and developmental issues.
The study, involving over 1,000 women, showed that while THC exposure accelerated egg maturation, it disrupted chromosome stability and cell division, leading to higher rates of abnormal embryos.
Laboratory tests also revealed defects in egg cell structures and altered gene activity linked to embryo development.
German experts welcomed the findings but urged caution, noting that the study did not account for age differences, genetic predispositions, or detailed cannabis consumption habits.
They stressed that more research is needed to assess long-term effects and whether younger women without genetic risks experience similar outcomes.
