UN Calls for Global Disaster Alert System Amid Escalating Extreme Weather Events

The United Nations has urged world governments to adopt a comprehensive global disaster alert system as extreme weather conditions continue to intensify across the globe.

According to the UN, the increasing frequency of floods, heatwaves, wildfires, and storms is putting millions of lives at risk and threatening global food and water security. The organization warned that climate-related disasters are “spiralling out of control,” driven by rising global temperatures and inadequate early-warning mechanisms in many vulnerable regions.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the need for universal access to early-warning systems by 2027, stating that “every person on Earth deserves the right to be alerted before disaster strikes.” He called for stronger international cooperation, investment in data-sharing technologies, and improved infrastructure to mitigate the devastating impact of climate emergencies.

Experts say that implementing a worldwide alert system could significantly reduce casualties and economic losses, especially in developing nations that lack advanced meteorological and emergency response capabilities. The UN’s renewed appeal comes amid record-breaking climate disasters that have displaced millions and caused billions of dollars in damages globally.

How does this matter to Africa continent?

In Nigeria ,flood has displaced thousands of people across the country, due to climate change and other factors related to environment.
