The Nigerian Senate, during its plenary session on Wednesday, resolved to summon the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede; and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to appear before it over the growing insecurity and recent killings in Kwara South Senatorial District.
The resolution followed a motion raised on the floor of the Senate concerning the renewed wave of attacks, kidnappings, and killings of residents in the affected communities. Lawmakers described the situation as alarming and unacceptable, lamenting the loss of lives and the displacement of villagers due to incessant banditry and communal clashes.
In the motion, senators called for an immediate and coordinated federal security response to stem the violence. They also demanded increased deployment of security personnel and intelligence resources to the troubled areas.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the session, stressed that the National Assembly would not fold its arms while Nigerians live in fear and insecurity. He said the invited officials must brief the Senate on the measures being taken to restore peace and protect citizens in the region.
“The Minister of Defence, the Chief of Army Staff, and the Inspector General of Police are to appear before this Senate to provide detailed briefings on the federal government’s coordinated response to the insecurity ravaging Kwara South,” Akpabio stated.
The Senate further resolved to send a delegation to Kwara State to commiserate with affected communities and assess the security situation firsthand.
