Ghanaian social media influencer Abu Trica, identified by authorities as Frederick Kumi, has been arrested over allegations that he masterminded a multimillion-dollar romance fraud scheme targeting elderly Americans.
According to U.S. prosecutors, the 31-year-old allegedly used AI-generated fake identities on social media and dating platforms to deceive victims, gain their trust, and extort money. Investigators claim the scheme netted over $8 million, with proceeds reportedly shared among accomplices in both Ghana and the United States.
Kumi was taken into custody in Ghana during a joint security operation, and U.S. authorities are now seeking his extradition. He faces charges of wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering, offences that each carry potential sentences of up to 20 years in prison.
The arrest forms part of a wider U.S. crackdown on West African cyber-fraud networks believed to be increasingly targeting elderly Americans through sophisticated online scams.
