Tirana, Albania
Albania has introduced its first artificial intelligence-generated minister, an avatar named Diella, in a parliamentary session this week.
Prime Minister Edi Rama presented the new “State Minister for Artificial Intelligence,” who appeared on large screens in traditional Albanian dress and delivered a three-minute speech.
The government says Diella will serve as a symbol of innovation and transparency, particularly in the fight against corruption.
Opposition lawmakers, however, protested the move, raising constitutional concerns over appointing a non-human, non-citizen to a ministerial role. Despite this, the motion passed with 82 votes in the 140-seat parliament.
Developed in partnership with Microsoft and Albania’s National Agency for Information Society, Diella is designed to perform assigned duties without personal interests a concept the government hopes will strengthen trust as the country pursues EU membership.
